SoG Approved: Cotopaxi Luzon 18L daypack

Written by: Kevin Linderman

Simple. Light. Practical.

I love these words, especially when they describe gear. I try to avoid gear that resembles the opposite. This summer I found one of the simplest, lightest and most useful packs I’ve ever experienced: the Cotopaxi Luzon 18L day pack.

Cotopaxi (pronounced koh-tuh-PAK-see), is the name of the highest active volcano in the world. Located in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador, it tops out at 19,498ft.

It’s also the name of a philanthropic outdoor gear company based in Salt Lake City. The company is known in well-meaning circles for its giveback program, which directs a portion of proceeds to fund “sustainable poverty alleviation, moving people to do good, and inspiring adventure.”

That’s right up our alley. At Shoulders of Giants, we strive to have an impact like Cotopaxi’s. We also love their gear—particularly the Luzon 18L.

When I go to a restaurant, particularly a fancy restaurant, I judge it by the menu’s simplest items.

With enough work, anyone can pull off something complicated. But in the process, many lose focus on the simplest of items because, well, they’re simple.

I tend to go for the cheeseburger, if there is one on the menu. If a chef can’t make a good cheeseburger, how can they make a quality $50 bone-in ribeye?

The Luzon 18L is a great cheeseburger (speaking metaphorically, of course). It’s so functional and simple that the company has my trust they can also make more complicated gear well.

The Luzon has a large center pocket that can be inverted to contain the entire pack. It weighs less than a pound and takes up less space than my doc kit.

The pack is non-intrusive, and fits easily in a larger pack (it’s nice to have for day hikes on long excursions), a duffle bag, or wherever.

Once unfolded, the pack is bright, colorful, and appealing. It rides comfortably and can fit everything needed for a day hike or a day in town on a family vacation. The 18-liter space is easily accessed via a drawstring at the top, and the CamelBak pouch works as designed. And because the bags are made from recycled materials, no two look exactly alike.

We sell the Luzon 18L in our shop for $49.95.
